At present, Bon Odori danced by people of Japanese descent is generally referred to as Bon Dance. However, prior to World War II, the different dances were named after the immigrants' respective home regions. For example, Iwakuni Ondo is the dance of people with ties to Yamaguchi Prefecture, and Fukushima Odori the dance of people with ties to Fukushima Prefecture. In this manner, Bon Odori danced by people with ties to Okinawa is called Ryukyu Bon Odori. Because Okinawans had a culture and language different from people of other Japanese prefectures, the Japanese believed that the Okinawans were inferior. This created a feeling of embarrassment of their own culture within the Okinawan community. However, during the 1920's, the Japanese view of Okinawan culture began to change, and it was no longer considered inferior. In a 1922 Maui Shinbun, an article was written in regards to the impressive Bon dance being danced by Okinawans. The focus of this paper is not only the content of Ryukyu Bon Odori, but also the way that other Japanese viewed it, as well as its historic backdrop in Hawaii. The key area is Maui island, as the Okinawan community there has continued to keep Ryukyu Bon Odori alive. In conclusion, it can be said that the following factors helped to preserve Ryukyu Bon Odori from pre-war days until the present. The Bon Odori of the Okinawan community in Maui is not only beautiful, but it was also regarded highly by Japanese people from other prefectures on the island, received high praise from famous Japanese researchers such as Shinobu Orikuchi, and Hisao Tanabe, and has won competitions of the Japanese association ofMaui. Moreover, the costumes used by Okinawans in pre-war Hawaii was the same as those used by Okinawans in Okinawa at that time.
