It was also the year in which Inoue Tetsujiro, a Tokyo Imperial University Professor, published his Treatise on National Morality. While Iha made only one reference to Inoue in his essay“ Remembrance of My Junior High School Days,” Inoue knew Nishida intimately as his former teacher through the latter’s lectures on Indian philosophy. Despite these historical details, the coevalness of the three thinkers has seldom been examined within the studies of modern Japanese thought. While both Inoue and Nishida did not, in fact, write about Okinawa, it is possible to inquire as to the potential significance of their silences. By focusing upon Inoue and Iha, my paper, on one hand, examines how Inoue’s thesis on Japanese nationality that aims to institute “national morality” encounters the problems of “hybridization” and “mixture” and the migration from the Japanese Empire’s South Pacific islands and yet manages to bypass the issue of Okinawa. It then considers the potential significance of the Jewish “diaspora” in both Iha and Inoue and compares the former’s discussion of “assimilation” of non-Japanese ethnicities and the latter’s promulgation of Japan-Ryukyu common ancestry theory and the theory that advocates Japanization of Okinawans.
