 note = {The more English words Japanese students acquire, the higher scores that they obtain in standard English tests such TOEFL and TOEIC. However, the foregoing scores do not guaranteethat they develop one of the most important intercultural communication competences, i.e.,sense of humor. The paper proposes the first step of understanding English humor should be the examination of words in dictionaries, rather than contextualized humorous episodes, which might engender more difficulties of understanding.
