Until the end of the shell period, these two areas had distinct cultures characterized by very different archeological records. It is only with the advent of the Gusuku period that Miyako and Yaeyama islands were integrated into the same cultural area as Amami and Okinawa islands. Likewise, Ryukyuan languages are broadly classified into Northern Ryukyuan, spoken in Amami and Okinawa islands, and Southern Ryukyuan, spoken in Miyako and Yaeyama islands.
