I summarize the link between HPV and cervical cancer, and review recent research on HPV DNA testing in adjunct to cytology for routine cervical cancer screening and prophylactic HPV vaccination against the most common HPV types associated with the disease. Further, I describe the high prevalence rate of HPV infection in women of Okinawa, and trends in cervical cancer incidence in Okinawa prefecture, which has never decreased in these 20 years.
