A questionnaire was used to survey 1,121 subjects working in different companies, participants of adult day service centers and persons who came for physical checkups in Okinawa, from March to June of 2003. All subjects were informed about the aim of the study and those who gave their consent were registered for the study. The questionnaire consisted of 16 items of questions regarding basic attributes, utilization of alternative therapy, the kind of utilization, expense etc. The relationship between utilization of alternative therapy and health locus of control was investigated using the Japanese version of Health Locus of Control (HLC). The effect of alternative therapy on quality of life (QOL) was measured with the WHO/QOL-26. Alternative therapy in this research was defined as all therapy except those used in organized medical practice. The SPSS statistical package, ver.6.1 was used for data analyses. 1) About 40% of the subjects utilized alternative therapy. The most utilized one was dietary supplements. The kinds of utilized therapy differed with age groups and conditions of disease (p<0.05-0.001). 50% of the motivations to utilize alternative therapy were for health maintenance and improvement. 70% answered that they were satisfied with the alternative therapy they used.  2) The sources of information on alternative therapy were friends, mass media or families for 80% or more of the subjects. 70% of the subjects consulted medical personnel about utilizing alternative therapy.
