To understand more about dental care for patients showing symptoms of HIV infection or AIDS, we sent questionnaires to 427 members of the Okinawa Dental Association, of whom 100 responded. We found that many institutions do not have adequate measures in place to prevent or combat infection in general. We also found that dentists consider infected patients to be troublesome and more costly. Knowing that a patient has HIV created worry that staff and other patients may become infected. Dentists and other dental staff have a strong fear of and are prejudice against HIV infected patients.
