The total insured population numbered 589000 in 1982 and 600000 in 1985. The results are as follows: 1. The number of diabetics in 1982 was 1286 for males (0.45%), 1953 for females (0.65%) and 3239 for total (0.55%). Prevalence of diabetics over 40 years old was 1.36% for males, 1.72% for females and 1.56% for total. Prevalence of diabetics over 60 years old was 2.22% for males, 2.70% for females and 2.52% for total. The prevalence of females was higher than that of males. 2. The number fo diabetics in 1985 was 1925 for males (0.66%), 2785 for females (0.91%) and 4710 for total (0.78%). Prevalence of diabetics over 40 years old was 1.87% for males, 2.28% for females and 2.10% for total. Prevalence of diabetics over 60 years old was 2.82% for males, 3.69% for females and 3.35% for total. The prevalence of females was higher than that of males. 3. The number of diabetics in 1985 showed an increase of about 1.5 times those in 1982. 4. Prevalence of diabetics for males in this study was almost same as the average prevalence rates in Japan, while prevalence of diabetics for females in this study was higher than that. Then prevalence of total showed higher than the average prevalence rates in Japan. 5. In chronological distribution of diabetics, the peak was found at the age of 60 years both for males and females in 1982, while at the age of 70 years both for males and females in 1985. 6.The frequencies of patients who treated with insulin in 1985 showed an increase of those of in 1982. (1982: 8.6% for total, 47.6% for under 20 years old, 39.2% for the age of 20 years, 1985: 10.5% for total, 66.7% for under 20 years old, 44.3% for the age of 20 years) 7. Prevalence of diabetics by area, prevalence of diabetics of Naha City showed a higher rate than those of another City, and those of rural districts. Meanwhile, prevalence of diabetics of the solitary island districts showed lower rate.
