Smoking rate was 44.6% for male and 4.0 % for female students. Images of cigarette smoking assessed by the free association technique were classified into physical, affective, socioeconomical and environmental components. The predominant component was physical or health-related and environmental ones. The attitude toward cigarette smoking of the current and ex-smokers were remarkably different from those of experimental and never smokers. Although the former had unfavorable images in physical or health-related component as well as the latter, their affective component of images were favorable in contrast to those of the latter. This disparity of images suggests that current and ex-smokers have enough knowledge of health effects of cigarette smoking, but they are psychologically favorable toward smoking. This  fact shows the reason why ex一smokers could easily relapse into smokers. Female students had similar images as male in general, but never smokers had relatively favorable images in the affective components. This finding means that female students have latent desire to take up smoking even if they have never smoked. The author emphasized the importance of affective aspect of smoking behavior in health education especially to prevent taking up the smoking habit.
