The anterodorsal nucleus and anteroventral nucleus projected to posterior area 24 and all of area 29. The anteromedial nucleus projected generally to both areas 24 and 29, but principally to anterior area 24. The laterodorsal nucleus projected only to area 29. The anterior and posterior portions of the thalamic nuclei topographically projected to the anterior and posterior regions of the cingulate gurus, respectively. Neurons in the medial region of the anterior nuclei projected to the anterior area of the cingulate gyrus while neurons located in the lateral region projected to posterior areas. Collaterals (6.2-12.9%) from the anteromedial nucleus projected diffusely to areas 24 and 29, while collaterals from other nuclei projected primarily to areas adjacent to each other. Structures other than thalamic nuclei also contained retrogradely labeled neurons following the injection of tracers into the cingulate gyrus. Labeled neurons were consistently observed in the claustrum, nucleus of the diagonal band, zona incerta, certain intralaminar nuclei, lateral hypothalamus, raphe nuclei, and locus coeruleus following injections of either tracer into any one of the areas of the cingulate gyrus.
