We studied 644 Japanese migrants from Okinawa living in Hawaii and 1103 Japanese living in Okinawa and found 78 NIDDM patients in the former and 82 NIDDM patients in the latter. We investigated the prevalence of dyslipidemia in these 78 NIDDM Japanese-migrants living in Hawaii and 82 NIDDM Japanese living in Okinawa. Blood samples were obtained after an overnight fast for determination of serum lipid levels, fasting plasma glucose (FPG) concentrations, and levels of immunoreactive insulin (IRI) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA_lc). We also calculated LDL-cholesterol levels and atherogenic indexes (AI).No significant differences in the FPG and IRI levels were noted between Hawaiian and Okinawan NIDDM patients.
