A total of 968 private and 76 public wells were identified from May to July in 1996. The number of respondents to a questionnaire was 245 of 400 randomly selected private well owners. About 64% of the 245 wells were constructed 50 years ago. Ninety one percent of the wells were shallow wells (under 30 meters). The utilization rate of the well water was 80.4%. Most people used the well water for watering the flowers in their garden and for washing cars. No one used the well water for drinking. Most of the owners did not know the chemical and biological qualities of their well water. The water qualities for 40 items were examined for 30 wells randomly selected in February and May, 1997. In August, 29 of the 30 wells were again examined. Among these items, 28 are the standard values for tap water quality, and 16 are standard values for ground water quality such as well water were determined. Mercury, anionic surfactant and phenol, organic matters such as trichloroethylene, and agricultural chemicals such as Thiuram were not detected in the well water examined. There were no significant difference by months except for a high concentration of total iron in August. By land utilization, the well water in the agriculture areas had high muddiness, while in the residential areas had small number of common bacteria, low concentration of COD, Ca^<2+>, Mg^2+ , water hardness and SO^<2->_<4>. With respect to geological features, the values for muddiness, Mg^2+, water hardness, and Cl^- in the well water from the alluvial soil area near the sea were significantly higher than those from the muddy stone and sandstone areas far from the sea. Compared with the standard values of 28 items for the qualities of tap water, strong color, large number of common bacteria, the presence of E. coli group, high hardness and high concentration of NO^<->_<3> were found in many wells.
