There were four cerebral infarctions, one cerebral bleeding, one case of schizophrenia and one case of dementia in the past medical histories. There were one with appetite loss, six with abdominal distention and three with abdominal pain as the chief complaint. Endoscopic retortions had been done for five of the 8 patients in the past. In five of the 8 operations, only sigmoidectomies were done electively. Three of the 8, sigmoidectomies with colostomies were done in urgency. All patients of the elective operation and one of the urgent patients followed a good postoperative course, but two of the 3 patients from the urgent cases were lost after the operations due to sepsis and severe pneumonia . Also, we evaluated the diagnosis and treatment of sigmoid volvulus. We had to do rectal examinations by digitus in the physical examination before the endoscopic retorsion of sigmoid volvulus. If the patient was in a generally unstable condition including muscle rigidity or, bloody or tarry stool in the rectal examination, we gave up the endoscopic treatment and had to prepare for urgent operation to avoid septic shock .
