In the period from April 1982 to March 2012, there were 4,559 medico-legal autopsies; 3,409 male(74.8%) and 1,150 female (25.2%). There were approximately 100 autopsies per year during 1982-2001, then the number of autopsies increased during 2002-2011. Ages ranged from 0 to 99 years. In the last decade, the average age of the victims has increased. The number of autopsies did not vary with the seasons. Homicidal autopsies have decreased in the last decade. There were approximately 350 autopsies per year in 2010 and 2011, and the ratio of medico-legal autopsy in 0kinawa Prefecture was the fourth highest in Japan. Recently,we need to develop a medico-legal investigation system of death in Japan, including medico-legal autopsy. Furthermore, we require the mentoring of younger forensic pathologists.
