We observed the antitumor effects of the treatment by means of the mean survival time of the mice and the inhibition of tumor growth. We set two transparent vinyl plastic bags in the pressure chamber which was maintained at 2 ATA pressure, and connected a rubber oxygen tube on one end of each plastic bag, then we allowed pure oxygen to flow into the bags. On the other end of each plastic bag, there was a 2 cm^2 approx hole through which the oxygen could escape. The mice were kept in plastic cages, 10 in each cage. The cages of mice then placed in the plastic bags, and the condition of the mice was observed through the pressure chamber window The experiments: The first experiment performed was on, 1)mice treated with BLM alone; and 2) mice treated with both BLM and OHP. We found that the antitumor effects were working better in the latter 2. However, we couldn't tell which of the two factors, high pressure itself, or concentrated oxygen, has dominantly enhanced the antitumor effects of BLM. Therefore, we performed another experiment; 1) BLM with air at high pressure, and 2) BLM with oxygen at atmospheric pressure. In this experiment, we found that the latter experimental condition produced better effects. Therefore, the results show that oxygen enhanced the antitumor effects of BLM more than high pressure itself. We observed the histological changes of the lungs in this experiment. Conspicuous changes in the lungs were metastatic carcinoma, athelectasis, hemorrhages and congestion.
