The order of magnitude in thermogenesis of the tissue slices with the various kinds of substrate composition, was as follows : G + E > G + E + NE -_~ E + NE > E > NE > G + NE > G where G stands for glucose, E for essential amino acid group and NE for non-essential amino acid group, respectively. Forty seven mcal, of heat per 30 minutes which was generated by liver slices incubated with essential amino acids-glycine mixtures was suppressed by 8 and 43 per cent in the presence of 2mM and 4mM of puromycin, respectively. The results mentiond above indicate that the relatively higher heat generation in the presence of glucose plus essential amino acid group would involve the contribution of the process of biosynthesis, particularly of the protein synthesis. In this case, glucose might have a role on supplying energy on the anabolic process. The amount of heat generated by the liver slices in the reconstructed system of urea synthesis was unexpectedly smaller than those in any other systems. This result apparently contradicts H. A.
