Bacterial counts were carried out using a Dip-slide method and a standard method in 414 urine samples of 200 pregnant women. In sammary, it was shown (1) that the incidence of asymptomatic significant bacteriuria was 7.9% in the first trimester of pregnancy, 9.1% in the second trimester, 8.8% in the third trimester and 10.1% at a month post partum; (2) that the bactenuna was due to Escheriacoli_<____________> in 50.0% of the patients and Enterococcus_<____________> in 20.8% ; (3) that approximately 85.0% of Escheria coli_<_____________> was sensitive to aminobenzyl penicillin, cephaloridin and nalidixic acid; (4) that 30.0% of 10 women with untreated bacterium developed clinically apparent acute pyelonephritis during pregnancy ; (5) that treatment of bacteriuria in 14 patients reduced the incidence of acute pyelonephritis to 0% ; (6) that the incidence of acute pyelonephritis in the women without bactenunuria was only 0.5%; (7) that there was no relation between the presence of bactenuna and the occurence of prematurity or toxemia. These results confirmed that acute pyelonephritis of pregnancy can usually be prevented. So all antenatal patients should have their urine screened for bacterium.
