Special attention was given to the effect of larval density when utilizing a mosquito rearing connection cage devised by the authors. An important factor found to influence adult vitality was the density of larvae in the connection cage. When first instar larvae were reared at high density (2000-3000 larvae per connection cage), the duration of larval development was prolonged and high mortality resulted in both the larval and adult stages. Using reduced numbers of newly hatched larvae, vigours adults were obtained. Out of 1000 larvae reared in one connection cage about 700 healthy adults were produced. Under these conditions, it is recommended that the number of newly hatched larvae per cage be of the order of 1000. High density rearing of fourth inster larvae and pupae was not found to be detnmentat to those adults using the connection cage. Approximately 3000 newly hathced larvae were reared in three trays (1000 larvae/tray of size 25 \u00d7 31 \u00d7 10 cm) until first pupation was observed. All the larvae were then transferred to a single connection cage.
