It is formed by bioconversion from carbohydrates in plant cellulosic materials. However, the efficiency of conversion of plant biomass and waste crop residues to methane is influenced by the complexity of its chemical composition. A treatment to depolymerize and solublize feed materials generally induces a greater susceptibility to the action of methanogenic bacteria. Napier and the related grasses which are feed herbs are known as the plants with higher mass productivity. The annual yield of napier in Okinawa is generally more than 80 t/ha on a dry basis. Their main chemical components are cellulose and hemicellulose, amounting to 60% of the dry matter of the plants. An alkaline treatment of the substrates improved the gas evolution, particularly under the thermophilic conditions.
