This article discusses the va tapuia (sacred space) and how the mobile phone becomes part of this ancient Samoan rhetoric. “Text messages from the grave” explores the collision of mobile technology and the Samoan belief of the space in-between (va) to demonstrate its social and cultural impact in Samoan villages. Albert Wendt describes va as “the space between, the between-ness, not empty space, not space that separates but space that relates, that holds separate entities and things together in the Unity-that-is-All” (Grace et al. 1999, 402). It is the space in between kin, family, and community where harmony and unity are prioritized (Lui 2003). The va tapuia is where sacred spaces of relational arrangements exist (Tui Atua 2009) and where the mobile phone allegedly connects to the afterworld.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_1617186643794":{"attribute_name":"Publisher","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_1522300295150":"en","subitem_1522300316516":"Research Institute for Islands and Sustainability"}]},"item_1617186702042":{"attribute_name":"Language","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_1551255818386":"eng"}]},"item_1617186783814":{"attribute_name":"Identifier","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_type":"HDL"}]},"item_1617186819068":{"attribute_name":"Identifier Registration","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_identifier_reg_text":"10.24564/0002017829","subitem_identifier_reg_type":"JaLC"}]},"item_1617186920753":{"attribute_name":"Source Identifier","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_1522646500366":"EISSN","subitem_1522646572813":"2435-3302"},{"subitem_1522646500366":"PISSN","subitem_1522646572813":"2435-3310"}]},"item_1617186941041":{"attribute_name":"Source Title","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_1522650068558":"en","subitem_1522650091861":"Okinawan Journal of Island Studies"}]},"item_1617187056579":{"attribute_name":"Bibliographic Information","attribute_value_mlt":[{"bibliographicIssueDates":{"bibliographicIssueDate":"2022-03","bibliographicIssueDateType":"Issued"},"bibliographicIssueNumber":"1","bibliographicPageEnd":"158","bibliographicPageStart":"143","bibliographicVolumeNumber":"3"}]},"item_1617258105262":{"attribute_name":"Resource Type","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"journal article","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_1617265215918":{"attribute_name":"Version Type","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_1522305645492":"VoR","subitem_1600292170262":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85"}]},"item_1617605131499":{"attribute_name":"File","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_access","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2022-03-17"}],"filename":"[143-158].pdf","filesize":[{"value":"561 KB"}],"mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"objectType":"fulltext","url":"https://u-ryukyu.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/2017829/files/[143-158].pdf"},"version_id":"ef26c8b2-ff8a-42b5-a9fd-c6575f1acd9e"}]},"item_title":"“Text Messages from the Grave”: Connecting the Mobile Phone with the Samoan Concept of Va Tapuia","item_type_id":"59","owner":"11","path":["1647397657031","1642838412624"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2022-03-17"},"publish_date":"2022-03-17","publish_status":"0","recid":"2017829","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["“Text Messages from the Grave”: Connecting the Mobile Phone with the Samoan Concept of Va Tapuia"],"weko_creator_id":"11","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2022-11-24T06:58:36.390536+00:00"}
