Thus, a collateral ascendant succeeded to the throne from a lineal descendant for the first time in the second Sho dynasty. If an emperor/king did not have a biological son or grandson, his brother or the paternal first, second, or more distant cousin in the imperial/royal lineage could succeed to the throne. Besides, their sons were able to adapt to the role of the emperor/king (this was the most desirable expediency because they belonged to the same generation as the founder of a dynasty). This succession occasionally happened in East Asian dynasties, although it was thought to be unnatural. Sho Kou succeeded to the throne due to unavoidable circumstances. However, whether to change existing rituals to ancestral worship became a serious problem because Sho Kou’s family line was transferred into the main branch of the Sho family. Therefore, the royal court and government ordered officers and scholars to discuss this problem and propose an appropriate style in conformity with the Confucianism standard and Chinese orthodoxy.\nThis paper involves the revised full text of Byosei Kyukyo written by Touyama Satonushi-Peitin, a chief interpreter in 1854 for the last King Sho Tai (r.1848-1879), explications, and Chinese sources. The officers and scholars of the consultation referred to Byosei Kyukyo, which was filed as a case record with their views, and the report of Touyama Satonushi-Peitin had a great influence on their judgments. Regarding the first point of the issue, the court must hold ceremonies restricted to the current King’s relatives, from his great-great grandfather to his father and their wives, except the first King Syo En. With the last rites for King Sho On (Sho Sei’s father) and Sho Kou (they were brothers), Sho Tai’s descendants removed their spiritual tablets from altars in temples at the same time and placed the spiritual tablets of Sho Sei and King Sho Iku (Sho Tai’s father)(they were cousins) on altars in temples. Regarding the second point of the issue, King Sho Tai must discriminate between generations and pass orders to equally treat the same generation, starting from the founders in the mausoleums.
