The aim of this paper is to introduce Australian Home Building Code mainly on the provisions of health and amenity applied to Subtropical Zone, and to compare it with Japanese code that is provided for whole country monotonously, even for\nOkinawa located in Subtropical Zone.\nFrom the comparison it seems to be obvious that there is some interesting difference in quantity and quality between the two codes. In general, Australian Code provides more specifically than Japanese one, for example on the quality of space and on the use of materials that secure life span of houses especially for the dampproofing. And also there seems to be some difference in the way of coping with\nthe climatic condition, particularly in the provisions for openings in external walls. Because of the climatic difference, ventilation seems to be prior somewhat to lighting in Australian Code compared with Japanese one. In view of the architectural design criteria suitable for Okinawa, this Australian Code may be worthwhile for architects and also for constructors with further consideration. |
