Alkaline pretreatment of the substrate improved the gas evolution from bagasse. The most favorable concentration of NaOH solution and loading of treated bagasse were 0.5 (w/v) and 0.5g (dry wet.), respectively. The gas production from the alkaline-treated bagasse was 1.8 times higher than that from the untreated bagasse. The total gas evolution from alkaline-treated bagasse was 540ml per g of dry substrate with a methane ratio of 63% in 10 days of fermentation. Acetic, propionic and butyric acids accumulated in the mash after 4 days of fermentation and the decreased gradually during further fermentation. The gas evolution from 5%-NaCIO_2-treated bagasse was 2.1 times higher than that from the untreated bagasse and methane content was 69%.
