1921年､スペインに起こった詩の改革運動“ウルトライスモ”の洗礼を受けて帰国する21才のボルヘスは，膨張し変貌したブエノス・アイレスを見て大きな衝撃を受ける。それは7年ぶりの帰郷というありきたりのものではなく，鋭い感性とたぐいまれな想像力に恵まれた詩人が，そして時には国境を越えた博識とその形而上学で最も非アルゼンチン的とされた作家が，自分の魂の根源を衝撃的に感じ取った新しい“発見”であった。ダダイズム，シュールレアリスム，表現主義，未来主義といった当時のヨーロッパの前衛主義的な傾向を混ぜ合わせたような“ウルトライスモ”を標榜し，アルゼンチンにおける“ウルトラ宣言”をしてその先頭に立つボルヘスは，しかし，ほどなくその活動から遠ざかり後に自らそれを鋭く批難するようになる。本稿では，ウルトライスモという前衛的な詩の改革運動に，“ブエノス・アイレスの発見”という詩人の内なる大事件を重ね合わせながら，ボルヘス初期(1920年代)における詩作活動の原点について考察した。
