内容記述 | Okinawan traditional tombs evolved from hillside caves to the more recent house-shaped tombs above the ground. The ossuarium is called “Jiish,” for the bones are also shaped like a house. Why were tombs originally caves and why did they evolve into house-shaped tombs? Furthermore, why are ossuaria shaped like houses? In addition, does it have any meaning that most tombs are plastered in white? This paper attempts to answer these archaeological questions about Okinawan tombs and ossuaria by showing their connection with Ryukyuan royal tombs. In short, the author considers that “Nirai-kanai,” an image of the white world, and “Teda-ga-Ana”( Sun's Hole), the Royal palace built in the other world, to be the basis for the conceptualization of Okinawan tombs, including the Royal tombs. | |||||||||
