| 内容記述 | In 2002, a controversial incident that reflected the changing reality of Japanese community in Hawai'i took place. The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i, which was established in 1987 to preserve and promote Japanese culture in the islands, came up with a plan to sell its own buildings in order to pay its debt, amounting to eight million dollars. Soon after this plan was made public, supporters of the center formed a group called Committee to Save the Center to stop the sale of the facility and started a vigorous fundraising campaign. Although the campaign was eventually successful, the leaders of the Committee to Save the Center came to realize that the center is no longer relevant to many, especially to the younger generation of Japanese Americans in Hawai'i.In this paper, I will discuss the changing reality of Japanese community in Hawai'i, by focusing on the crisis of the Japanese Cultural Center in Hawai'i. In particular, I will show how young Japanese Americans of the islands reacted to the crisis in various ways, based on fieldwork gained from participant observation. The ethnographic account offered here focuses on two types of youth - a young Japanese who actively participated in the movements to save the center, and others who distanced themselves from such community efforts. This ethnographic study offers a dynamic picture of the changing perception of ethnicity among young Japanese Americans and suggests the need for reconsidering the very concept of ethnic community and ethnic culture which are more often than not regarded as a given entity. | |||||||||
