Staff awareness of abusive actions to the elderly in long-term care insurance facilities was surveyed. A total of 702 responses (response rate, 65.6%) were obtained and then divided into abuse-experienced (n=432) and non-experienced group (n=270). Twentyseven abusive actions categorized by the Study Group for Treating the Elderly were evaluated by staff. Results were as follows:1) Men were more likely to commit abuse than women(p<0.01).2) The experienced group was significantly younger(p<0.05).3) Working periods and job experience were both significantly longer in the abuse-experienced group(p<0.05,p<0.01).4) Abusive actions were independent of job or institution type. 5)In 5 of 27 abusive actions, the experienced group considered actions categorized as physical abuse, psychological abuse, and neglect to be slgnificantly more abusive than the non-experienced group. 6)Regarding the factors contributing to abusive actions, overwork as most frequently reported, and regarding countermeasures to abuse, 'none to propose’ was most frequently reported in the experienced group. 7) Awareness of financial exploitation, social isolation or restraint of freedom and invasions of privacy as abusive actions were not significantly different between the groups. The experienced group was generally more aware of abuse than the non-experienced group. As unpleasant working environments were suggested to be a significant factor in elder abuse, improvement of working conditions would serve to protect the human rights of the elderly |
