In our department, palatal plates are actively used in the early postoperative period to achieve velopharyngeal closure of the fistula formation associated with palatoplasty. Palatal plate usage aids the early acquisition of velopharyngeal closure, and at the Same time results in a favorable dental arch. Here, the effects of palatal plate usage on jaw development were investigated, and the following results were obtained: 1. During the deciduous dentition (IIA) and mixed dentition (IIC/IIIA) periods, the upper dental arch length for the plate and no-plate groups was comparable to that for the healthy control group. 2. During the deciduous and mixed dentition periods, the maxillary dental arch widths (inter-deciduous canine, inter-deciduous first molar and interdeciduous second molar widths) for the plate group were significantly wider than those for the no-plate group. 3. In terms of occlusal contact assessment, during the deciduous and mixed dentition periods, the occlusal contactindex (total for contacts inthe anterior and molar regions) for the plate group was greater than that for the no-plate group. 4. The Goslon Yardstick was used to assess occlusion, and whilemany group1/2 cases were observed in the plate group, many group 2/3 cases were also observedin the no-plate group. Therefore, the use of a palatal plate may contribute slgnificantly to the acquisition of more normal occlusion |
