The purpose of this investigation is to clarify the views on home nursing care for cancer patients among visiting nurses and the relationship between their concerns and their years of nursing experience in order to promote the home care system for cancer patients in Okinawa, Questionnaires consisting of 17 questions were given to 179 visiting nurses working in 39 home nursing stations in Okinawa from January to April of 2002. 131 nurses gave valid responses which were used for the analysis. $x^2$ tests were used for statistical significance using the SPSS package. The results are as follows; 1) The subjects were highly interested in nursing cancer patients, and 90% of them positively wanted to accept cancer patients requiring home nursing care. 2) Compared with nursing of non-cancer patients, 60 to 70% of the subjects had more difficulties in nursing cancer patients, and majority said that the mental care for cancer patients and their families is extremely difficult. The two items, limitation of home nursing Care and cooperation with patients' doctors, in the questionnaire were related to years of nursing experience. 3) Although 90% of the subjects said they wanted to learn about cancer nursing, about 60% said they do not have such opportunities. 4) Majority of the subjects wanted to learn how-to provide mental care for cancer patients and the r families. The item of expertise in cancer nursing in the questionnaire was related to years of nursing experience. |
