It is generally said that HB virus infection have been decreasing in J apan in recent years. An epidemiological study was conducted to evaluate the present state of HBV infection in Miyako district where HBV infection was prevalent in the past. Sera from 927 inhabitants living in Miyako district , with age ranging from 0 to 71 were examined for HBV sero-markers by enzyme immuno-assay The over all positiverateof HBs antigenwas 9.3%, with the peak of over 18% between age25 to 39. The prevalence of HBs antigen among young people was low, 0.9% between 0 to 19 years of age. Moreover, there was no HBs antigenpositivecase among under 10 years of agegroup. The prevalence of anti-HBs antibody was 0.9% between 0 to 9 years of age, and then, gradually increased with advancing age, and remained to beover 50% after 35years of age. The positive rates of both HBs antigen and anti-HBs anti-body in the first decade were significantly lower than those in the second which were significantly lower than those in the third. In thesubject area, 84.9% of healthy adults had one or more HBV sero-markers. In contrast , over 95% of young examinees aged 0 to 19 years had none of HBV sero-markers. HBe antigen prevalence among adult HBV carriers was found to be 1.3% and the great majority of them(94.9%) had already acquired anti-HBe antibody. In conclusion, recently, HBV infection have been decreasing in Miyako district where was prevalent area of HBV infection in the past. This decreasing tendency of HBV infection was caused by the decrease of HBe antigen positive HBV carriers(source of HBV infection), and by other factors, not by HBV vaccine. |
