Here we report on the new activity, Mobile Clinic, carried out from August 1996 to August 1997, the final year of Primary Health Care (PHC) project in Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao P.D.R.), which had been implemented for five years since October, 1992. The activity counted 67 times at the pilot areas, 8 Health Posts and 2 villages, in three districts in Khammouan Province. The total number of patients was 2,161 and that of patients under five years old was 531 (24.6 %). The mean age of the patients was 27.5 years old (range; 0 to 95). The areas where the activity took place were divided into two in view of disease distribution, economic condition and their location; one was the areas with high number of elderly patients and with low number of infants, and the other to the contrary. The former was located along the Mekong River, and the inhabitant could easily access clinics in Thailand across the river. The incidence of chronic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis was high in these areas. The latter was, on the contrary, located inland, and the inhabitant could hardly access clinics and purchase medicine. The predominant diseases in these areas were infectious diseases such as malaria, pneumonia, diarrhea. Several problems including frequent lack of drugs were found in Drug Revolving Funds system, which was being tried to solve. The data obtained in this activity was regularly reported to PHC Section of the province, and revised PHC activities based on the data were under consideration. The activity of Mobile Clinic was contributory to PHC activities, and it is expected a new way of collaboration between PHC and medical system in presence. |
