This retrospective analysis was based on the data obtained from 276 patients with facial fractures caused by road traffic accidents. The patients visited the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinic, University of the Ryukyus Hospital between January 1985 to December 2000. The data revealed the following: 1. The causes of facial fractures were motorcycles (61.2%), automobiles (22.8%), passengers (9.8%), and bicycles (6.2%). 2. The male to female ratio was 4.6:1 in motorcycle accidents. On the other hand, the male to female ratio was 1.7:1 in automobile accidents. 3. The age group that had the highest incidence according to accident type is as follows: motorcycle accidents; between 10 to 19-year-old (52.1%), and automobile accidents; between 20 to 29-year-old (52.4%). 4. As for the temporal distribution, approximately one half cases occurred from midnight to early morning. 5. Although the most common location of fractures in any accident was mandible, midface fractures and multiple facial fractures occurred more in motorcycle accidents than in other types of accident. 6. Alcohol consumption was a factor in many accidents that resulted in serious facial fractures. |
