Forty-one patients with colonic cancer including 11 cases of early cancer and 57 patients with benign colonic polyp were endoscopically diagnosed and studied in the paper. In those with colonic cancer, there were 19 males and 22 females, while with benign polyp 32 males and 25 females. Averaged age of patients with advanced cancer, early cancer and benign polyp were 59.8, 55.5 and 53.7 respectively. The lesions were detected in the sigmoid colon and rectum in more than half cases, namely 50% in those with advanced cancer, 65% early cancer and 52% benign polyp. The results of histological investigation on 25 specimens obtained by the endoscopic polypectomy showed 5 lesions of adenocarcinoma, 18 adenomas and 2 inflammatory polyps. As regards the correlation between the size of polyp and malignancy in 114 lesions of polyp, the malignancy rate was 3.3% in those under 10mm in size, 44% between 10 and 20mm and 67 % over than 20mm. The diagnosis by endoscopy was coincided with the result of roentogenologic examination in 84 % of the cases with advanced cancer and 43% polyp. The endoscopic biopsy failed to diagnose in 24% among cases with advanced cancer and 27% in early cancer. Multiple colonic cancers were detected in 8 cases and it was noted that in 21 cases with cancer, polyps co-existed. |
