Although the discussion of marine cultural heritage has received much attention, limited research considers the culture and heritage of small islands, especially in a developing country like Vietnam. In recent years, socio-economic development programs on the small islands, on the one hand, have made significant contribution to the local economies; on the other hand, the development process has caused negative impacts on natural as well as cultural aspects of small islands, particularly the marine cultural heritage. This paper examines the current situation and future challenges of marine cultural heritage under pressure of socio-economic evolution on Lý So^'n Island of Vietnam. A qualitative approach was used in this study to analyze and synthesize the data. In addition, semistructured interviews were conducted with key persons who study and live on Lý So^'n Island. Preliminary findings revealed that the marine cultural heritage in the study site is being preserved quite well in terms of tangible and intangible cultural heritage. However, future challenges related to the impacts of economic restructuring (e.g., changing from traditional fi shery to other sectors) and tourism development (e.g., changing the local lifestyle) will be happening that may cause the loss of marine cultural heritage on this small island. This research suggests that the local government policy makers should take these challenges into consideration together with economic development goals. Future research is also needed to widen the perspectives of other stakeholders regarding the relationship between economic development and the conservation of marine cultural heritage of small islands. |
