内容記述 | Kobashikawa is the name of a village in Nishihara Town, Okinawa Prefecture. In early modern Ryukyu, some of the descendants of families belonging to the Shi class, who were appointed by the Shuri Royal Government as jito-shiki, held the name of this place as their family name. This study investigates the history of the Kobashikawa family line (in the collection of the Kobashikawa family owned by the Naha City Museum of History). The position of jito-shiki originated in medieval Japan, and in Ryukyu, hereditary succession to this post was rarely allowed. The Kobashikawa family, a Naha lineage samurai family that had been elevated to the Shi class for its achievements in cargo management during the voyages to Fuzhou in China and Satsuma in Japan, did not accede to this post. The family history of Kobashigawa reveals that for generations they were not given official duties or positions that would have filled the family budget. Nevertheless, in the first half of the 19th century, during the reign of King ShoTai, the Kobashigawa family was able to raise its status from shinzan (newcomer) to hudai (successive generations) by making large donations to the Shuri Royal Government, which was about to receive an accredited Chinese envoy. Their means of amassing such wealth is unknown. Most noteworthy is the fact that, as satu-wake, the family that made the donation was allowed to edit their genealogy separate from the legitimate genealogy, resulting in a new branch of the legitimate with a different status from that of their patrilineal relatives. Nonetheless, the difference between Taisou (major sect) and Shiryu (its branch) in the monchu (kinship group) remained constant, even though they maintained separate family histories due to satu-wake. The Shuri Royal Government was not in a position to suppress satu-wake, as this institution made it easier to control the vassalage by creating differences among families and stimulating competition for rank and office. In contrast, satu-wake also affected the bonds and activities of the kinship groups of the Shi class. In the southern area of Okinawa Island, some inhabitants made a periodic pilgrimage to Nakijin-gusuku and the historic sites of their ancestors. The Kobashigawa family of hudai with their history of dedication to the Shuri Royal Government participated in this ritual despite having no relationship with it. Behind this ritual, there was a sense of seeking and worshipping distant ancestors that transcended monchu and status, and this sense was supported by traditions that were inconsistent with the official history of the Shuri Royal Government. It is possible to see that around the mid-19th century, some families belonging to the Shi class sought both official status elevation and expanded social relations in the private sector in parallel. |
