内容記述 | Background and Objectives: This article was written to demonstrate the method and effectiveness of early childhood bilingual education in Japan by a non-native Japanese couple, and to clarify the process of language acquisition of the subject child by comparing and analyzing the characteristics of language development of bilingual children. Research Design and Methods: One examinee is a daughter of a non-native Japanese couple (father speaks English), and we analyzed the process of bilingual language acquisition in her early childhood. Additionally, as a comparison of the development of language ability, we analyzed the language ability development of a daughter raised by a native English / native Japanese couple, and another daughter raised by a non-native Japanese couple of English beginners. Results: (1) Even for non-native Japanese couples, if bilingual education is developed in accordance with “one parent; one language,” where one parent treats the child in English and the other parent in Japanese, the language acquisition process is nearly the same as that of Japanese-English bilingual children of native English / native Japanese couples. However, this does not apply to Japanese L2learners with respect to the acquisition of plurals and articles. (2) Compared to Japanese-English bilingual children of native English / native Japanese couples, the subject child’s language ability showed similar development. Both receptive and productive skills have developed as seen in Japanese-English bilinguals, and production through the application of intaken phrases has been confirmed. Discussion and Implications: In this research, the bilingual language development from 0 to 4 years 7 months was discussed, so continued research after that age is needed to determine the final development of early childhood bilingual language development. |
